A Parable About Time Management
The teacher stood in front of her students who had signed up for a course on time management. They were committed to using their precious time in the most optimal way.
Because this teacher was wise, she created a lesson that was interactive, driven forward by a series of questions that provoked responses from the class.
First, the teacher put a 10-gallon bucket on the table that represents the time we each have in our lives…
-
She then took some rather large rocks and filled the bucket to the top. She asked the class, “Is the bucket full?” and they responded in a chorus, “Yes.”
-
The teacher said, “But wait.” She then added some smaller rocks, and as these rocks filled in some of the nooks and crannies left by the large rocks, she once again filled it to the top. “Now is the bucket full?” The class responded, “Yes!”
-
Then she added little pebbles, which further filled in the little remaining space, and repeated her question. This time the class was a little more tentative as they started catching on that all was not what it seemed. Still, their eyes told them that the bucket was full and they responded, “Yes.”
-
Oh, this teacher was crafty…she next added some sand which easily fit in between the rocks and pebbles. This time the bucket really did seem full—how could anyone add anything else? The students repeated “Yes?” with a measure of uncertainty.
-
But alas, the teacher had one more trick up her sleeve. She took a pitcher of water and poured it right in over the rocks and sand. No problem—there was indeed room for the water! “Is it full now?” Not surprisingly, the students were kind of afraid to answer at this point, but they all believed the bucket was finally as full as it could be.

All in the Family: The Or Family
Longshore Toys and Games
Michael, how did your family first enter the toy industry?
This has to date back to the 1960s. My first job was working in a bank for import services. The Hong Kong manufacturing industry was on the rise, and I was a young adult anticipating new opportunities. I was fortunate enough to be invited by David Pomier, to start up a trading company for him. It was called Worldwide Buying Services; we sold toys and sundries to the United States. I had no experience, and I had to learn my way through to find factories, manage QA/QC, and organize shipments. After approximately 10 years of working in Worldwide, I was invited by Shelly Greenburg to start up the Shelcore office in Hong Kong for another 5-6 years, until I was confident enough to start Longshore on my own in 1978, which was during the opening of China.
In the beginning, we offered general trading services for small orders. We needed to build up our client base. I thought the best way to find potential clients was to go around the hotel cafes near Toy Fair, and there I saw Barry Schneider, Vice President of Far East Operation at Pressman, whom I met back at Shelcore. Barry was looking for an agent in Hong Kong, so we were grateful to be appointed as the FOB agent at that time. That was when Longshore became Toy-focused. Soon after, I met Michael Kohner through referral, and we have worked on countless projects in the international market ever since.Read More. . .

What Kids Actually Think About The Metaverse. KidsKnowBest surveys kids on what they know about the metaverse...and discovers it’s all about the shoes. Although we’ve been talking about transmedia for over a decade now, the form it takes keeps changing. Right now, it’s being reshaped—and resold—as the metaverse, an amorphous form billed by techcos and pundits as the future of how we will interact with media...
A Guide To Building A Neurodiverse Workforce. Leading kids entertainment companies are embracing practices that nurture neurodiverse talent—and finding there are a multitude of benefits. The past two years have seen companies take meaningful strides towards establishing workplaces that are diverse, equitable and inclusive, but barriers continue to exist for neurodiverse job candidates.

This is MerMay, the monthlong art challenge in which artists are invited to create a work depicting a mermaid every day and then post it online with the hashtag #mermay. In 2016, Tom Bancroft, a former Disney animator, drew two lounging mermaids looking at their "shell phones," a scene inspired by his own daughters. When he posted the image on social media, it went viral, he told NPR.
RAISING THE BAR: THE FORGOTTEN TRADEMARK RIGHT — TRADE DRESS. The COVID-19 pandemic has fueled an uptick in toy sales, and the ever-increasing percentage of e-commerce sales makes product appearance — as opposed to packaging — more important than ever. In many cases, the outer packaging is not shown at the digital point of purchase and consumers see the product itself instead.
THE BENEFITS OF CLASSIC PLAY. After two years of dealing with a once-in-a-century pandemic, consumers are longing for in-person, real-world experiences to interact with one another. But between a massive increase in screen time and social distancing, it seems as though interpersonal communication skills have atrophied, especially with the younger generation.
PAINTING A PICTURE OF WELLNESS IN THE ACTIVITIES CATEGORY. The ideal childhood should be made up of rainbows and butterflies without a worry in sight, but kids today are growing up in a hectic world and it’s taking a toll on their mental health. As a result, manufacturers are creating more toys in the activities category that are incorporating themes of wellness and mindfulness to help kids process their emotions and learn important life skills.

KEY DESIGN STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESSFUL TOY PACKAGING. How does a brand stand out among the visual chaos and oversaturation of the toy categories at retail? There’s a broad spectrum of design strategies that companies need to employ correctly to make a brand’s packaging successful, such as establishing solid package design architecture, owning a color palette, and staying consistent.
REPRESENTATION BEYOND THE COMPUTER SCREEN. Generations Z and Alpha are often described in the media as the “first” or “most” likely to do things. They’re the most diverse and most connected generation — many U.S. kids own multiple devices by age 3 — meaning they are also the most self-aware. In a trend largely guided by social media, kids have a stronger sense of identity at a younger age than previous generations.
Harnessing the power of classic play. ASTRA’s vision is to “change the world through the power of play” — and classic play is vital to this vision. Backstory: Toys ‘R’ Us — the epic tale of ‘the world’s biggest toy store’. It was the late 1940s and the dawn of a new era in the U.S. With World War II firmly planted in the rearview mirror, families settled down in some of the country’s first planned communities. Amid the suburban sprawl, Charles Lazarus — a cryptographer in the U.S. Army — returned to civilian life and began to crack a different code by accident...
THE GO-TO PLAYBOOK FOR TOY ADVERTISING IS TRANSFORMING. Traditionally, the advertising route for toymakers hoping to drive sales in the last three shopping months of the year went through one channel: linear TV. But, the go-to playbook for toy advertising is transforming...

The cinematic art of advertising toys. On Wednesday, April 30, 1952, families across the U.S. settled in for a night of entertainment. In the midst of a commercial break, something different appeared on screen among the usual words from sponsors: a message encouraging kids to play with their food. Looking for its first big retail sellout, Hasbro took a chance at advertising its new Mr. Potato Head toy directly to families on TV.
Unpacking the prevalence of mystery and deduction in tabletop gaming. Many of the newest games hitting store shelves and gamers’ too-full storage closets can be boiled down to a simple, three-word question: Who done it? Or, more colloquially, whodunnit? Games that center on mystery — of both the crime-solving and social deduction persuasion — have been a long-standing staple in the category.

The Bizarre History of Roller Skates. Roller skates were invented in 1735 by a Belgian man named John Joseph Merlin. Then in 1819, a man named Monsieur Petitbled patented the roller skate – but his version had only three wheels and no way to turn!

Colin Cantwell, an animator, conceptual artist and computer expert who played significant production roles in seminal science fiction films like “2001: A Space Odyssey, “Star Wars” and “WarGames,” died on May 21, 2022 at his home in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was 90. His partner, Sierra Dall, said the cause was dementia. Mr. Cantwell’s work on several influential movies reached its peak with “Star Wars,” George Lucas’s hugely successful space opera.
